Book Review: OFF THE AIR by Christina Estes

Jolene Garcia, a local TV reporter in Phoenix, Arizona, covers general assignments and special projects. Her stories often require more research and time. When a death occurs at a radio station, Jolene and other journalists rush to report the facts. The body is identified as Larry Lemmon, a controversial talk show host, who died under suspicious circumstances. Jolene conducted his final interview, giving her and her station an advantage. However, the competition intensifies as the story unfolds. Jolene is determined to solve the murder, which could make or break her career.

In OFF THE AIR, Christina Estes peels back the curtain on the cutthroat world of TV journalism, all while weaving a murder mystery. An Emmy-award-winning reporter herself, Estes deftly crafts a captivating murder mystery storyline that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from the very first page. Her protagonist, Jolene Garcia, is well-developed and multi-dimensional, but some of the supporting characters feel a bit clichéd and stereotyped.

Despite these minor flaws, Estes weaves a complex web of suspense with a plot that offers a fresh perspective. The narrative is meticulously crafted with layers of tension and a challenge for readers to solve the puzzle alongside the intrepid reporter. The red herrings are numerous, and the tension builds steadily to a climax before gently relaxing to a satisfying conclusion.

One aspect of the book is its commentary on how local television news has changed in the era of social media. While this detail is interesting, it can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Overall, OFF THE AIR is a decent debut for Estes. If you’re looking for a weekend adventure, this book is for you. However, if you’re seeking an action-packed and puzzling read, you may be slightly disappointed.
