Playlist for DEAD AIR

Updated: Jan 22, 2022

It's less than a month until my new book, DEAD AIR, is released. With the plot of the book being weaved into the world of radio broadcasting, music obviously plays crucial part in the overall story. So, I figured it was time to post a DEAD AIR playlist.

My protagonist, Kaitlyn Ashe, is a nighttime radio DJ in Philadelphia. Naturally, she is well-versed in musical genres and eras, including the 80's, 90's, classic rock, and contemporary hit music. So, here is a list of the artists and songs mentioned in DEAD AIR, not necessarily in order of appearance.

  • You and Me - Lifehouse

  • John Legend (No specific song listed.)

  • Adele - (No specific song listed, but if I had to pick one, it would be Skyfall, the theme from the James Bond film of the same name. Love that song.)

  • Love Stinks - J. Geils Band (The perfect "anti-dedication love song".)

  • Bruce Springsteen (No specific song listed.)

  • Take It On the Run - REO Speedwagon

  • Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon

  • Gin Blossoms (No specific song listed, but my pick would probably be Follow You Down.)

  • Devo (No specific song mentioned, but is there really any other option for this band?)

  • Journey (No specific song mentioned, but I'd go with Separate Ways any day.)

  • Justin Timberlake (No specific song mentioned.)

  • Think of Laura - Christopher Cross

  • Africa - Weezer

And finally . . . Can't Fight this Feeling by REO Speedwagon

That last song plays a vital part throughout the book, and was one of the inspirations for DEAD AIR. I'll probably be forever scorned for saying this, but I've often thought that Can't Fight this Feeling was more about a stalker than a lover. With lines like "It always seems that I'm following you" and "Even as I wander, I'm keeping you in sight," the song just has this creepy underlying vibe to it. Not to mention the line "I'll come crashing through your door" which has breaking and entering written all over it.

There it is. The DEAD AIR playlist.

DEAD AIR comes out on June 9th. Scroll down for links to pre-order.

Three can keep a secret, but only if two are dead.

No one knows that better than Kaitlyn Ashe, who has been running from a childhood secret her whole life. Until now. Crowned the top-rated radio DJ in Philadelphia, she is finally ready to settle down with her fiancé and new friends who know nothing about her past. When a sudden flood of anonymous letters threatens her seemingly charmed life, she realizes that someone out there knows. But who? As the threatening letters escalate, Kaitlyn’s life spirals toward a reunion in the one place she’d hoped to never visit again: The Shallows. Isn’t her secret buried with the dead?

From the Philadelphia skyline to the rural suburbs of New Jersey, Dead Air weaves a suspenseful tale of past misdeeds and present malice as Kaitlyn plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with a mysterious killer who will stop at nothing to get revenge.
